Pool filters have the important job of removing all fine debris from your pool water. The water is continually getting bombarded by dust, sand, garden dirt, pollen, and other plant debris. Also when you swim, skin cells and clothing particles are also entering the water. Without the filter this debris will continue to circulate in your pool.
There are three main filtration systems used in pools, Sand (Glass), Cartridge Filters, and Perlite.
Sand Filters can be filled with Sand or Glass and they work by passing the water through the sand bed, and the debris is captured between the particles of sand or glass. The debris is removed by backwashing the sand with about a thousand litres of water to remove the debris into a soak well.
Cartridge Filters use a woven polyester fabric to remove debris. The filter is round and to obtain the surface area, they are pleated. They range in size from 50 to 600 square feet of fabric. The larger the filter, the longer the time between cleaning.
Perlite filters have the finest filtration down to 3 micron, so your pool will be sparkling. It does require a bit more time in cleaning and adding perlite after filter is cleaned. There is also the cost of the Perlite, every service.
The filter needs to be matched to the pool size, the pump size and the bather load of the pool. Also important to take into consideration is where the waste water will go. It is definitely not one size suits all pools.
